Saint Petersburg is a city and a federal subject located in Northwestern Federal District of Russia on the Neva River at the east end of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea. St. Petersburg's informal name, Piter, is based on how Peter the Great was called by foreigners. The city's other names were Petrograd and Leningrad.
Founded by Tsar Peter the Great on May 27, 1703, it was capital of the Russian Empire for more than two hundred years (1712-1728, 1732-1918). St. Petersburg ceased being the capital in 1918 after the Russian Revolution of 1917. It is Russia's second largest and Europe's third largest city (by city limit) after Moscow and London. Saint Petersburg is the world's largest city north of Moscow. 4.6 million people live in the city, and over 6 million people in the city with its vicinity. Saint Petersburg is a major European cultural center, and important Russian port on the Baltic Sea. The city, as federal subject, has a total area of 1439 square km.

We tend to go mainly to the Western countries - usually far far away. We've been to Mexico, Dominican Republic, Brazil, etc. Thought it would be quite exciting to go to the other side of the globe - to the East. We made a trip to a major culture centre and Europe's third largest city - Saint Petersburg (sometimes called Petrograd). The Unpleasant bit before our journey was the fact that we had to have an invitation and (obligation to) pay 100 dollars for visa. It scared us a bit. On the other hand, you have to pay for almost everything nowadays.
Petrograd's beauty depends pretty much on the weather. In general, everybody feels cheerful and all around you it seems to be brighter and happier when it's not raining. We can make the judgement because it rained the first part of our stay and it was sunny for the rest of our stay. The difference was huge!
We really recommend to visit the boulevard, which is the busiest part of the city. There's a vast number of shops, restaurants, clubs and discos where you can have a good night out. The clubs are at standard level. We visited just two of them - the first was a tiny club and the second one was more like a disco club. Judging from girl I met - they are simply beautiful or at least I just came across really pretty ones.
And where to go when you've got enough of clubs and simply need to go out? You shouldn't miss the cruiser Aurora, which played an important role in the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. On the night of October 25-26 1917, it fired a blank shot at the Winter Palace, giving the signal to the rebellious workers, soldiers and sailors of the city to storm the palace. That moment triggered a dramatic episode in Russia's history and was the start of over 70 years of Communist leadership. The Winter Palace is opposite the cruiser and it's really worth seeing. The third place you should go to is Peter's courtyard. The residency of Peter II. You can find there wonderful fountains, Amazony park and fresh coastal wind...

Russia, also the Russian Federation, is a transcontinental country extending over much of northern Eurasia (Europe and Asia). With an area of 17,075,400 square km, Russia is by far the largest country in the world, covering almost twice the total area of the next-largest country, Canada, and has enormous mineral and energy resources. Russia has the world's ninth-largest population. Russia shares land borders with the following countries (counter-clockwise from northwest to southeast): Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia, and North Korea. It is also close to the United States (the state of Alaska), Sweden, and Japan across relatively small stretches of water (the Bering Strait, the Baltic Sea, and La Pérouse Strait, respectively).
Formerly the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR), a republic of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), Russia became the Russian Federation following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in December 1991. After the Soviet era, the area, population, and industrial production of the Soviet Union (then one of the world's two Cold War superpowers, the other one being the United States) that were located in Russia passed on to the Russian Federation.
After the breakup of the Soviet Union, the newly-independent Russian Federation emerged as a great power and is also considered to be an energy superpower. Russia is internationally recognised as continuing the legal personality of the Soviet Union and is a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. It is also one of the five recognised nuclear weapons states and possesses the world's largest stockpile of weapons of mass destruction. Russia is the leading nation of the Commonwealth of Independent States, a member of the G8 as well as other international organisations.
